The abbot of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra revealed that he was urged to recognize Epifaniy as his leader.

Metropolitan Pavel, abbot of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, stated in court that he was pressured by investigators and expressed his stance regarding the accusations brought against him, Graty reports.

"At first, someone – I don't remember who – came to me and said: either you recognize Epifaniy as your head, or you surrender the Lavra, or you will face suspicion. I did not recognize, do not recognize, and will not recognize him. Because I know the rights of the Church, just as you all know your rights," said the metropolitan.

He emphasized his commitment to the canonical Orthodox Church and his accountability before God: "As for being a son of my state, I have never in my life renounced it, nor have I ever had such a desire. And I am a son of the holy Church – our canonical Orthodox one. I answer before God." Metropolitan Pavel also stated that he does not consider himself guilty: "Never in my life have I been against any person, because every person is an image of God."

Metropolitan Pavel's lawyer, Andriy Domansky, told Graty that the defense expects an acquittal and stressed that his client will not agree to a plea deal. Additionally, the lawyer stated that Metropolitan Pavel does not intend to participate in an exchange of prisoners or civilians between Ukraine and Russia.

As reported by the UOJ, Metropolitan Pavel's defense is proposing to hear 180 witnesses in court.
