She promised to be the best congressperson for the state of Delaware.

34-year-old Democrat Sarah McBride was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Delaware, reports Reuters, citing Edison Research data.

Sarah McBride has become not only the first transgender person elected to the U.S. Congress but also the first transgender woman to have interned at the White House.

Since 2021, she has served as a member of the Delaware State Senate. Ahead of the election, McBride told Reuters that she would focus instead on the issues she would prioritize, rather than the history-making nature of her candidacy.

McBride’s goal in politics is to create a more inclusive environment. She promised to be the best member of Congress that she can be for Delaware.

“Whenever you are first, you often have to try to be the best version that you can,” McBride stated.

Asked what message young transgender Americans should take from her expected election, McBride said, "Anyone who worries that the heart of this country is not big enough to love them should know that they belong ... Our democracy is big enough for all of us."

According to Politico, the November 5 election results also mark the first time that two Black women will simultaneously serve in the U.S. Senate.

Previously, UOJ reported that in the U.S., a transgender man was named “Woman of the Year”.
