Patriarch Bartholomew threatened with revocation of Turkish citizenship

In Turkey, Emin Fahir Gür, Deputy Chairman of the opposition ATA party, stated that Patriarch Bartholomew should be stripped of his citizenship due to his anti-Turkish remarks on international platforms, reports Halkinsesi.

"It is unacceptable for Bartholomew and Elpidophoros, who cannot travel abroad without the permission of the prefecture (of the Istanbul district of Fatih), to make anti-Turkish statements and discuss the Turkish Republic and our dear Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus on international platforms!" Gür said.

The politician said that representatives of the Phanar should be warned about the inadmissibility of such statements, and if this rhetoric continues, they should be stripped of their citizenship.

Gür added that the Patriarch should be reminded that he is a member of the clergy. He also criticized Archbishop Elpidophoros, suggesting that he be removed from office because he too makes statements on international platforms, claiming the "illegal occupation" of Northern Cyprus by Turkey.

As reported by the UOJ, Patriarch Bartholomew withdrew his signature from the "Peace Summit" communiqué due to criticism of the Turkish authorities.
