Ukraine expresses concern over LGBT rights in Hungary

Ukraine, along with 35 other countries, signed an appeal to the Hungarian authorities regarding the support of the LGBT community and condemned the persecution of people with non-traditional orientations in the country, reports European Truth.

The appeal states that 35 countries condemn acts of violence, hate speech, persecution, stigmatization, and discrimination directed at individuals and communities based on their sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression.

"In this regard, we are seriously concerned about the recent application of legislation and political rhetoric, particularly in Hungary, that contradict the principles of non-discrimination, international human rights law, and human dignity, and contribute to the stigmatization of the LGBTQI+ community," the signatories' statement reads.

The 35 countries, including Canada, the USA, New Zealand, and European states, declared that the Budapest Pride has the longest history of such events in the region.

"We emphasize its role in promoting equal treatment and social acceptance of all LGBTQI+ people, as well as in creating a more open, fair, inclusive, and equal society," the appeal states.

On June 22, a large Pride event took place in the Hungarian capital, Budapest, protesting against Prime Minister Orban's government's policies towards the LGBTQ+ community.

As reported by the UOJ, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated that the EU is actively promoting the advance of LGBT rights, rejecting the Christian heritage.
