Head of Federal Foreign Office: Attempts to re-write WW2 are dishonest

On the eve of the 75th anniversary of Victory Day over Nazism, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas made a statement in which he condemned the attempts to rewrite the history of the outbreak of World War II. This was reported by the Strana publication citing Spiegel magazine.

“The German past lurks the danger of revisionism, which replaces rational thinking with myths,” said Maas. “Therefore – and not because of seeming moral superiority – we, Germans, need to express our position when the attacked are made attackers, and the victims are called criminals.”

The minister emphasized that attempts by some politicians to shift the blame for unleashing WWII to the countries other than Nazi Germany are dishonest, unfair and dangerous:

“The attempts made in recent months to dishonestly rewrite history compel us to make some clarifications, which are unnecessary per se in the face of solid historical facts: Germany single-handedly unleashed the Second World War by attacking Poland.

Germany is the only responsible party for the Holocaust crime against humanity. Whoever sows doubt here and imposes the role of a criminal on other nations causes injustice and splits Europe.”

Recall, the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory made a statement that the Victory Day should remind us that conflicts between nations cannot be resolved by force.
