Archbishop Gugerotti: they want to forget about Ukraine – it aggravated relations between the USA, Europe and Russia

It is not fashionable to keep Ukraine in focus. Ukraine is a country, which has triggered or aggravated complexities in the relations of America, Europe and Russia, an backed them into the corner. It was stated by Apostolic Nuncio in Ukraine Archbishop Claudio Gugerotti, according to Radio Watykańskie.

The Archbishop underlined that from the standpoint of international politics Ukraine has appeared on the roadside. Geopolitical developments, even like the recent meeting of the presidents of Russia and Turkey, are shifting the world’s focus to other places. In the situation of uncertainty and precariousness, prevailing in the world, the war in Ukraine is receding into the background.

“It’s worth saying that for political reasons it’s not fashionable to remember about Ukraine, because Ukraine is a country, which has triggered or aggravated difficulties in the relations between the USA, Europe and Russia, having driven them into the corner. Therefore, to speak about Ukraine today would mean to speak about one’s failures. I don’t think this silence was totally spontaneous,” he said. 

“Ukraine, which certainly used to be in the sphere of the Russian Federation, decided to take a course towards Europe and the United States under the pressure of the West. There was Maidan event, an actual separation from Russia with all economic repercussions which are the case when somebody falls out or comes out against their breadwinner. At the same time, though, due to various reasons, the West did not occupy Russia’s place, does not care about improvement of the populations’ living standards in Ukraine. Besides, Ukraine has lost at all fronts,’’ added Archbishop Gugerotti. 

The Pope’s diplomat in Kiev recalled the dramatic implications of the war for Ukrainians. As an example, he cited that the level of average salary has decreased four times since Maidan. “It means the war problem is overlapped by the problem of general impoverishment across Ukraine. Unless it changes, we are threatened by the war of the poor,” warned the Pope’s Nuncio.
