In Cherkasy, OCU seizes half of UOC churches

In Cherkasy, 5 out of 10 UOC churches have recently "transferred" to the OCU, reports Suspilne. Cherkasy, citing the Cherkasy Diocese of the OCU.

According to representatives of the OCU, the following churches voluntarily transferred:

• St. Michael's Garrison Parish;
• The Meeting of the Lord Parish;
• The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish;
• St. Sophronius Parish;
• The Dormition Parish.

The OCU also published a list with addresses of 5 UOC churches that they claim "remain under the control of the Moscow Patriarchate."

OCU representatives asserted that the UOC "remains a structure subordinate to the Moscow Patriarchate, raising questions among many Ukrainians about its spiritual and national identity."

In contrast, the OCU stated that it possesses the Tomos, which purportedly "confirms its independence."

It is worth noting that all "voluntary transfers" in Cherkasy were accompanied by conflicts. Two of these, involving the seizure of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Monastery and St. Michael's Cathedral, resulted in numerous injuries to UOC believers and clerics. Videos of these violent incidents spread worldwide, sparking widespread resonance, even among OCU supporters.

It is also important to recall that the Tomos of the OCU contains clauses indicating clear dependence on the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. Specifically, the OCU:

- recognizes the Holy Apostolic and Patriarchal Ecumenical Throne as its head";
- cannot establish parishes abroad and must transfer existing ones to Constantinople;
- cannot change the title of its primate without the permission of Constantinople;
- is obligated to appeal to Constantinople for important church matters, and more.

It will be reminded that following the seizure of St. Michael's Cathedral, medical assistance was required for 26 UOC clerics and believers.
